[SOLVED] Black screen for login after install

Hi all.
Since 1.21, I have an issue when the install is complete and it trys to log in for the first time I get a black screen. 
If I click the screen, it shows the user account picture on the login screen but does not do anything. 
The screen goes back to black again and does not login to the desktop.

As I said, I have not had this issue ever before, and I have tried with 1.21 and also 1.25 and same issue.

I had a similar issue with a black screen, but it happened after I logged in, it just sat there for over a minute as a black screen with the cursor in the middle.

The solution, when it finally let me see the desktop, was to disable the AppReadiness service.  This was probably because I had removed most of the ModernUI apps.

If it doesn't let you login at all, could you attempt to disable the service from safemode/WinPE.

I tried that but it did not make any difference. 

I also tried installing without an autounattend.xml, but I get the exact same issue, so its not any unattended settings.

Anyone got any ideas what component could affect this?

Are you able to boot into Safe Mode, or Safe Mode with Command Prompt?
If not then I'd say something fairly critical is missing/corrupt from the installation (you've probably already worked that out )

If you can replace sethc.exe with cmd.exe (probably offline), then at the login screen pressing the [shift] key multiple times should bring up a cmd prompt.  From there you could diagnose things from the Event Logs...

Yes I confirm that sometimes there are some troubles with a black blank screen during installation. I've experienced that few times, so I update this thread with  "PENDING" status and moved it to "BUGS" forum !

I fixed some troubles with "Optimizations - Windows - Unneeded Files Cleanup" ...

theKramer, I've tried your wccf, and you need to take care about the fact that you use the same "TEMP" folders for both "Windows" and "Local" ... it's better to separate them (like "C:\TEMP\LOCAL" and "C:\TEMP\WINDOWS") to avoid troubles with some software (I don't remember which ones).

I've tried, like you, to regroup both TEMP folder, but since I separate them I have better result in my WinReduced ISO !

I disabled the optimizations section, coz I was having issues with a corrupted disk, and I still get the black screen

Kicked off a reduction before going to work.
Removing just drivers/fonts/keyboards/languages as a first run.

Will report this evening when I get home from work and install the test ISO.

I also had the brainwave that I remember that it used to work perfectly until at least 1.18, I think, so I am going to go back over the archived versions, to see if I can find what version introduced the issue..

I removed just notepad from the ISO and no black screen.
Only another 600+ components to test.
You are NOT allowed to add any more features winter for 2 years while I test this issue

That's strange, I'm not able to reproduce this bug, even with your wccf ... what Edition are you using ? Did you integrate Updates ?

I use a VMWare image that I capture via DISM. It is updated regularly via Windows Update. I updated it recently at the start of December.

I got it working with fonts/keyboards removed on the latest 1.32, so its not version dependent. It didnt work with drivers/fonts/keyboards/languages so now I am removing fonts/keyboards/languages as I would think issue is more likely to be located in drivers than languages. If that works, I will add in each section, leaving Presets & drivers until the end.
I am at work now, so will have an update when I get home this evening.

I also do not have any presets enabled yet.

I have also downloaded an official MSDN ISO, and will test if I get the same issue on that, also.

Bizarrely, removing fonts/keyboards/languages resulted in a black screen.
So something in languages breaks it.

Trying fonts/keyboards/multimedia now...

I will try all components, one by one, in combination with fonts/keyboards, to ascertain which components work/dont work.

Items not removed:
Fonts 
I did not remove Static fonts for Cache (or whatever it is called )
I did not remove Meiryo

Keyboards
I did not remove French keyboard (removed all others though)

Anyone else with this issue feel like helping me out, coz its a royal pain in the ass, and I am going home for Christmas on Friday, so wont be able to test between 19/12 and 28/12...

Here is the last wccf file that worked, but I think there is no need to worry about components marked OK.
In that wccf, I reduced Accessories, Font, Keyboards, Multimedia, Network, Themes, Tweaks.

At the moment, I have another session running, in which I use my regular wccf file, but this time, I have deselected Drivers & Languages to see if that will work. This has all options bar Drivers & Languages. I think I will be able to test at most 2 more times before I go home for Xmas, so I decided to go extreme

I will report again this evening on the results...

Ok. So now I know for certain (well, pretty certain) that the root cause is located in the Drivers & Languages sections.
The latest ISO I did had everything included, except for those 2 items, and it installed correctly. No black screen.

This is the last test I can do for 2 weeks.

@Ben: if you have the time, can you test to see if you can find out what Drivers components cause the issue?

@winter: since we now know that it is located in those two components, do you have any ideas?

I tested the languages, it works fine. So I think it's belong to drivers.

Unfortunately, I also have an issue with Languages folder, so I will have investigate that also.

I think that maybe the fact that I use a French keyboard with an English OS installation might be complicating the situation

I use Windows 8.1 which is captured from a VMWare VM using DISM. This was updated via Windows Update at the start of December, so it has Update 1 & 2, but probably not Update 3.

I dont use VB, I use VMWare instead, so not certain if issue occurs on VB as well. I have not tried to install on physical computer as I dont want that to be offline. Since its my entertainment center also, its rare that I install on my main machine...
