what is causing this error?

I ran windows updates and the following update failed with error code 80073712:

Update for Windows 8.1 (KB2887595)

Also same error code 80073712 also happened when I try to install any Language Pack.

I did a search and find this link https://forum.winreducer.net/t174-error-80073712-related-to-windows-features?highlight=80073712

Is it still true that online updates still dont work? why most of the updates works but a few of them dont work?

Microsoft states this error code means that windows component store (WinSxS folder) is broken. I assume you ticked the expert cleanup in the optimizations.

Hello,

And this is a known issue when you reach a limit in the windows components removing. In fact, when you remove a components, WinReducer also cleans all depending files, folders, etc ... So when a windows hotfix needs to update those removed files, it fails because there are missing files. This is why you have a corrupt components store. The best choice you have is to slipstream (using winreducer for example) all updates before removing process to be sure to have all necessary updates properly integrated.
