i also tried removing all files from WINSXS folder like it was mentioned here a couple times:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

i was not sure because i got some folders which got the same name so i kept them all. But it didnt work (installation was OK but i.e. i couldnt use the disk cleaning tool and also installations failed

EDIT:

PS by removing that files, folders and links it reduced my

boot.wim by 10mb
install.wim by 160mb

This version of WinReducer 7 can't slim the boot.wim down. It doesn't even mount it xd. It is a known bug. If you're interested, I managed to reduce my boot.wim file to just 90 MB in size geek.

im mounting it myself :Pbut it would be nice for a future release to be added.

170mb less (boot and install.wim) is a lot for some files that are forgoten to be deleted

i also would be interested in slimming down the Winsxs folder like in the link i posted in my first post. after deleting all that files my install.wim went from 2.64 Gb to 1.24gb but like said, i couldnt start programms and also installations didnt executre correctly

My latest install.wim file is 563 MB. My latest boot.wim file is 90 MB. My ISO is like 690 MB. And I'm talking 64 bit here, haha. It's nice to see people here are still into Windows 7 jocolor.

how did you manage that?

i think you deleted files from WinSxS. could you post a screenshot what you kept? and what else did you remove?

yes i like win7. And as long as WinReducer 8.1 is not final (and as long as i didnt find the perfect combination of removing) im using windows7

descriptionEmpty folders /files /links to remove EmptyRe: Empty folders /files /links to remove

Well, you probably are using a combination of two applications: RT7-Lite, and WinReducer 7.

I use a combination of four applications, lol: RT7-Lite, vLite, RT7-Booster, and WinReducer 7.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

This is my latest functional 64 bit install.wim file Smile.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

And this is the configuration I always use in RT7-Lite Smile.

But RT7-Lite is just the tip of the iceberg. As I said, I use it with three more applications. If you're interested in the whole process, just tell me Wink.

descriptionEmpty folders /files /links to remove EmptyRe: Empty folders /files /links to remove

ok oO

i thought all funktions in Rt7-booster are the same as in WinReducer 7.

in fact i use (first top)

WinToolkit (since today it even supports windows 8.1)
Rt7-lite
Winreducer7
7Customizer 0.5.0 (it gives me a lot of errors and maybe event dont finish all tasks maybe i should try it after wintoolkit) (it gives me another 160-200mb less)

and after that i mount boot.wim and install.wim and delete all files and folders i mentioned in my first post

in wintoolkit there is a vlite section, but maybe i should try just vlite

descriptionEmpty folders /files /links to remove EmptyRe: Empty folders /files /links to remove

I don't use WinToolkit. It seems too complicated, and it is not good at reducing. And, yeah. Try vLite. It will reduce your image by a lot.

descriptionEmpty folders /files /links to remove EmptyRe: Empty folders /files /links to remove

more_horiz
ok i will give it another try Wink

i will report back when im finished Razz

descriptionEmpty folders /files /links to remove EmptyRe: Empty folders /files /links to remove

Just a heads up: you need to mount and capture your install.wim with GImageX, otherwise, vLite will fail. If you already did this, then that's fine, no need to do it again. And also, you need to work with an untouched boot.wim file. If you give vLite a modified boot.wim, it will fail. Last but not least, DON'T REMOVE ANY SERVICE WITH VLITE (this means, don't check them for yourself. If vLite checks one, then that's fine). DON'T REMOVE INTERNET EXPLORER WITH VLITE, AND DON'T REMOVE WINDOWS FIREWALL WITH VLITE. If you remove ANY of those, your image will fail. Remove anything you want, but stay away from those. And if you want a real reduction and you don't give a damn about Windows Update select to clean the Component Cache and the Internet Information Services.

Good luck.

hey i cant get vlite to work.

i used an untouched iso and reduced it with RT7Lite

(because of your previous post :

"I use a combination of four applications, lol: RT7-Lite, vLite, RT7-Booster, and WinReducer 7"

i took this order)

after that i tried vlite but it didnt work

so i replaced the boot.wim with one from my untouched iso

And also, you need to work with an untouched boot.wim file. If you give vLite a modified boot.wim, it will fail.

but it also failed. i mean failed by vlite i think tries to mount a wim but failes and than cloeses itself. did you mean that with failed, too?

and also this:

Just a heads up: you need to mount and capture your install.wim with GImageX, otherwise, vLite will fail. If you already did this, then that's fine, no need to do it again

i tried it but i didnt understand how to mount it so i used Wintoolkit to mount it and than i used GImageX v2 to captre it:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

but with that wim (and the untouched boot.wim) vlite gets an error that it cant finde something under (configurated temp folder) -->Windows\servicing\Packages

thats it.

so what did i do wrong?

EDIT:

ok i could mount the wim via GImagex and captured it like on the picture above. i also replaced the boot.wim with the untouched one. but also got this error...

EDIT2:

I tried again and now it worked...
i selected the first time as mount-temp folder drive H which is a ram disk. when i let the temp folder as default in C (my ssd) it worked (for the first look). it started to mount and than vlite shut down (closed itself)..............

i will try again tomorrow (better said today its nearly 5am oO)

Hey, KrX, check this out:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

My 64 bit SP1 ISO is 0.61 GB. It fits in a freaking CD!! All my software works perfectly, and the installation went great. I'm really proud of myself, man Smile lol.

One word : wonderful !

I'm interesting by this, because it could be useful for the new WinReducer v3.00 (new informations soon !)  Wink

and i reduced with Rt7Lite nearly the same as you, in RT7booster and WinReducer7 i selected All items, in 7Customize the same (saved another 200mb), deleted myself a lot of folders and files, and now im gonna use wintoolkit

That's great, Winter! Very Happy I hope we hear about it soon.

@Krx: Are you sure you are doing everything correctly? Because your image should be a lot smaller than that even without using vLite (that is, if you have selected everything I've selected in the three other apps). Do you delete the NativeImages folders from Windows/assembly? Because just that would reduce your image by 1/5 of a GB.

Oh, there are plenty of things you can remove from the Windows\assembly directory. But first you gotta make sure you can actually see the contents of the folder. First, mount your image. Second, fire up regedit.exe, and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Fusion. Once you're there, create a new DWORD value, name it DisableCacheViewer, and give it a value of 1. After this, go to where you mounted your image, and browse to the Windows\assembly directory. Once there, you're going to see two folders named "NativeImages_...". Delete both of them. Also, delete the "GAC" folder. After you've done this, you're going to search for anything that contains "Ink", "PowerShell", "Luna", or "Royale" in its name and delete it (all this inside the assembly folder).

My final Windows\assembly folder is 114.34 MB. The original was 657.30 MB. Doing this should lighten your install.wim by around 200 MB.

EXTRA TIP: Go to Windows\System32\catroot2. You're going to see two folders inside. Go in them, and delete the files named "catdb". Capture your image, and you're done Wink (except that you're not actually done, though, lol).

hey billybully,

i did like you said and my iso got 190mb less.

i found maybe something. i used the disk cleaning tool, and it found 96,4 MB Windows Updates which can be removed.

i searched in

"Download" in C:\windows\Software Distribution

but it was empty. any ideas where i can find these updates?

EDIT:

after login in and using this:

dism /online /cleanup-image /spsuperseded /hidesp
i get another 15mb oO

EDIT2:

with that reduction of windows/assembly are all net framework programms still running?

descriptionEmpty folders /files /links to remove EmptyRe: Empty folders /files /links to remove

All .NET Framework programs I use work perfectly with that reduction. About Windows Updates, I don't know. I don't integrate any updates, and I don't use Windows Update. Do you integrate updates? Do you use Windows Update?

descriptionEmpty folders /files /links to remove EmptyRe: Empty folders /files /links to remove

more_horiz
no at my running windows im dont use windows updates (i once did but most of them failed each time)

but yes i integrate updates befor i do anything else (my very first step) so my windows is always kind of up2date

do you have any other nice reduction tips Wink?

how do you get your boot.wim so small? (ours is 50mb smaller than mine)

descriptionEmpty folders /files /links to remove EmptyRe: Empty folders /files /links to remove

more_horiz
Ohh, you integrate updates... That's why your image ends up that big. I don't integrate updates. That's why my image ends up so small. Anyway, I'm going to tell you how to reduce your boot.wim file now. First, mount your boot.wim (I recommend you to mount it using RT7-Lite). Go to the mount folder, and delete everything except for "sources", "Windows", and the "setup.exe" file. Next, go to "sources", and delete every FOLDER except the "License" folder. Next, browse the "License" folder, and delete everything that is not related to your edition (if your image is from MSDN, you can delete the "OEM" and "eval" folders). Next, go to the Windows folder, and leave it exactly as follows:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Next, go in the Windows\System32 folder, and delete every FOLDER except for these:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Also, while you're here, delete all the keyboard layouts except for the United States one (its name is "KBDUS.dll"). Next, go to the Windows\Fonts folder, and delete everything but the XML file and the 35 "vga..." fonts. Next, go to the Windows\winsxs folder, and leave it exactly as follows:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

WARNING: After doing this, the files on the mounted image will be "locked" (you may see a little lock in the files icons). If you capture your image like that, it won't work. You have to send the three root files ("Windows", "sources" and the "setup.exe") to the Recycle Bin and restore them from it. Once you've done that, you'll no longer see the little lock on the icons, and your image will work.

After you've done all this, you can capture your image. I'm not done, really. You won't reach the size of my boot.wim file because there's a lot of stuff left to do, but it is way too much stuff, and it is complicated too. So I can't tell you every exact step I take because it is just too much.

Anyway, tell me how it went for you when you're done Smile.

ok i did as you said but i dont know why it seems as my boot.wim is a 32bit version oO? i dont got and amd64 folders in WinSxs and also no SysWow64 folder (but my installed OS is 64bit)

so i deleted all other files and folders, but my boot.wim is still 129mb (most reduction would be be deleting the winsxs folder)

descriptionEmpty folders /files /links to remove EmptyRe: Empty folders /files /links to remove

Lol what? That's weird, man. Where did you get your ISO from? Lol.

descriptionEmpty folders /files /links to remove EmptyRe: Empty folders /files /links to remove

more_horiz
i downloaded an all in one iso from here

[LINK REMOVED]

it should be an legal download

and i use only the ultimate version x64 (deleted all other versions with RT7Lite and WinReducer7)

REASON FOR EDITING : No download link is allowed

descriptionEmpty folders /files /links to remove EmptyRe: Empty folders /files /links to remove

more_horiz
ok i found out why my boot.wim didnt got any amd64 folders. there was an sourc64 folder next to the sources folder in the root of my iso (to save size i deleted it manually after deleting all other versions) in this folder there was an boot.wim with this amd64 and x86 folders

descriptionEmpty folders /files /links to remove EmptyRe: Empty folders /files /links to remove

Hey, KrX. I managed to reduce the boot.wim file a little bit more.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Look, I prepared a batch script for you to run it.

Spoiler :

Just copy and paste the whole text above in a Notepad document, and save it as a .bat file. After that, mount your boot.wim file, and move the .bat file you just created to the Windows\System32\en-US\ directory (in the mount path). Run it as administrator. After that, do the exact same thing with the following code, except that now you will put it in the Windows\System32\ directory.

Spoiler :

Tell me about your outcome Smile.

@winterstorm2050 It'd be awesome to see these also ported into the Windreucer 8.1/8.0 as well Smile

descriptionEmpty folders /files /links to remove EmptyRe: Empty folders /files /links to remove

thansk billybully i will try that,

meanwhile i got vLite to work Wink

i always mounted (with gimagex) the image and captured it. And vLite failed with an error.

after searching and searching i found on youtube a video where someone did not mount the image but "applyed" it (second tab im gimagex) and than captured it. And it WORKED Razz

EDIT: new problem with vilite...
i tried to remove components but during preparing process (near 50%) vlite hangs and need to be closed.
i tried again with only removing Sxs and it went well. but if i wanna remove something else (like ONLY games) it hangs again...

descriptionEmpty folders /files /links to remove EmptyRe: Empty folders /files /links to remove

I've never had problems with that, man. Why don't you try to run vLite on an untouched Windows machine? Your OS may be the cause of your issues.
